Gestational surrogacy is indicated in cases where the woman has a non-functional womb or cannot gestate for medical reasons.
Two different women are involved in cases of gestational surrogacy.. The genetic mother, namely the one providing the ovum which is fertilized with the sperm of her partner through IVF, and the surrogate mother, namely the one that gestates the embryo and gives birth to the child of the former.
Gestation of a couple’s embryo by a third woman is allowed upon judicial permit..
Indications for the use of gestational surrogacy include:
- congenital absence of uterus (Mayer-Rokitansky syndrome);
- congenital anomalies of the uterus;
- operations of the uterus that have destroyed the cavity
- multiple uterus fibromyomas;
- certain medical diseases rendering pregnancy dangerous for a woman’s life, such as congenital heart diseases;
- cases of multiple pregnancy losses;
- selected cases of multiple failures in previous IVF attempts.
